New Cultural History Museum opening in Kristiansand 2028

The museum will feature a three-story main building, a rooftop open to the public 24/7, and a surrounding park area. Constructed primarily in glulam and cross-laminated timber, the building will showcase high-quality finishes such as polished concrete and wooden slat walls. The design is by the renowned architects Helen & Hard.

Odderøya – A cultural destination

Together with Kunstsilo art museum and Kilden Performing Arts Centre, the new Vest-Agder Museum will make Odderøya island in Kristiansand one of the most exciting cultural destinations in the Nordic region.

The museum will tell the story of Kristiansand and the surrounding region, as well as our shared maritime heritage. It will also host temporary exhibitions and events, serving as a hub for historical interpretation alongside Odderøya Museum Harbor in Nodeviga and the island’s cultural heritage sites.

A museum for children and young people

The new museum will cater to diverse audiences and age groups. For the youngest visitors, there will be engaging activities both indoors and outdoors, designed to present cultural history through play and hands-on experiences.
Exhibitions will also incorporate cutting-edge technology where original artifacts cannot be displayed. The project is planned as a FutureBuilt development, with ambitious goals for sustainability and architecture. Universal design will be a key element throughout the planning process.
