SnartemoDugnaðr
Seminaret, kalt SnartemoDugnaðr, var arrangert av Vest-Agder-museet og Agder fylkeskommune. Det inngikk, slik boka også gjør, i disse og andre lokale institusjoners og myndigheters pågående satsing på å framskaffe og dele kunnskap om de svært rike folkevandringstidsfunnene fra regionen.
Utgangspunktet for SnartemoDugnaðr var ny og økt interesse for tekstilene fra høvdinggravene på Snartemo, og spesielt de brikkvevde båndene fra grav II og V. Den direkte foranledningen var at Randi Stoltz nevnte for Katja Regevik at hun hadde en drøm om å rekonstruere båndet fra grav II, «det som ingen har klart å se skikkelig på, den er så vanskelig, men den har jeg lyst til å prøve meg på».
Disse funnene har inspirert håndverkere til å finne tilbale til de vevde mønstrene og gjenskape dem i nye brikkvevde bånd, gjennom å bruke ekte fargestoffer og fibermaterialer som ligger så nær originalene som mulig.
Folkevandringstidens håndverkere var spesialiserte og kompetente. En høvding som ønsket å framstå slik hans rang krevde, var avhengig av å knytte til seg de aller beste håndverkerne, både for å lage klær og våpen og
annet utstyr.
Crafting Power – The Snartemo Finds in Theory and Practice
The contributions published in «Crafting Power – The Snartemo Finds in Theory and Practice» originates from a seminar held at Tingvatn, Agder, in 2020, and facilitated by the Vest-Agder Museum and Agder Council. The seminar was, as this publication is, part of these and other local institutions’ ongoing commitment to gain and share knowledge about the very rich Migration Period archaeological complexes of the Agder region.
The starting point of the «SnartemoDugnaðr» was a renewed interest in the textiles from the Late Migration Period chieftains’ burials at Snartemo, and in particular the complex structures of the tablet-woven bands from graves II and V. More specifically, it began when Randi Stoltz disclosed that she was dreaming about reconstructing the band from Snartemo II, «you know, the one who was not really studied until now, because it’s so complex and difficult».
These finds have inspired enthusiasts in the Nordic countries to return to the woven patterns and replicate them with new tablet woven bands, using genuine colorants and fiber materials as close as possible to the originals.

- Elna Siv Kristoffersen and Randi Stoltz writes about «cross crafting»
and the relationship between tablet-veawing and fine metalworking in
the Migration Period. - Maikki Karisto and Randi Stoltz discussed the textiles from grave II, with
a special focus on animal motifs and weaving techniques. - Krista Wright and her co-authors studies the precious textiles from
grave V, the origins of the wool used in them and the colourings. Their
work is based on new analyses of the textiles. - Mikko Moilanen writes about the sword blade from grave II and the
reconstruction of it. - Samuel Høiland discusses the Snartemo finds in lieu of other rich Migration Period finds in Agder.
- Frans-Arne H. Stylegar places the finds from Snartemo in an international framework in the Late Migration Period and attempts to interpret the warrior’s graves II and V as a specific, historical phenomenon, and as a result of a mobile, international warrior retinue settling in the interior of the Agder region in the early 6th century.
