En dypere forståelse av Snartemo V båndet
I dette heftet presenteres flere sider ved båndene. Først skal vi ta for oss funnhistoriene. Dette følges opp med en del som omhandler ett av symbolenes kulturhistorie – hakekorset – symbolet som binder disse to spesielle båndene sammen. Deretter blir selve båndene nærmere beskrevet og tolket, og til slutt følger en gjennomgang av veveteknikker og oppskrift for å veve disse eksepsjonelle båndene.
Ved å bruke moderne teknologiske metoder, har forsker Krista Wright ledet fiber- og fargeanalyser som gir oss dypere forståelse av Snartemo V båndets egenskaper. Vi anbefaler sterkt artikkelen «A Chieftains colourful garments» som ble publisert i Archeological Textiles Review i 2022 og i «Crafting Power (2025)».
Elisabeth Vetland har deretter farget garn i grytene sine, inspirert av både analysene og jaktet etter toner som fanger naturens skjønnhet. Kanskje var dette også noe fargeren i sin tid forsøkte å fange?
Hvordan ble Snartemo V-båndet fremstilt?
Prosesser som vi kanskje aldri kommer til å forstå i sin helhet. Historien bak Snartemo V-båndet er delvis skjult for oss, men vi kan forsøke å avdekke noe av dens mystikk samtidig som vi skal forsøke å la den eie sin egen historie.
Med hjelp fra erfarne vevere, Randi Stoltz og Rasmus Twisttmann Jørgensen, har vi fått innsikt i hvordan båndet ble fremstilt. Her tar vi også søsterbåndet fra Øvre Berge til hjelp. Et tilnærmet likt bånd fra litt lenger sør i samme dalføre. Hva ser vevere når de studerer båndene 1500 år etter at det ble laget? Her følger vi håndverkerens møte med sine forgjengere, de som vevde båndene.
Og til slutt har Samuel Høiland utforsket symbolikken og sammenfattet tekstene.
«Det vakreste folkevandringstids gravfunn»
Det går et belte av rike arkeologiske funn fra eldre jernalder (500 fvt. -550 evt.) gjennom de indre bygdene vest i Agder, særlig fra folkevandringstid (375-550 evt.) Fremst blant disse er Snartemofunnet.
Graven på Snartemo som ble oppdaget ved en tilfeldighet under pløying i
1933, ble av arkeologen Bjørn Hougen (1898-1976) omtalt som «det vakreste folkevandringstids gravfunn der til denne dag er gravet frem av norsk jord.»
Mest kjent er ringsverdet med det gullbelagte håndtaket, men graven er så
rik på andre gjenstander også. Dette gjelder ikke minst det flotte brikkebåndet kjent som Snartemobåndet. Det er Snartemobåndet som har hovedrollen i denne fortellingen, og dette båndet bærer på mange hemmeligheter og mysterier, akkurat som resten av graven.
For Vest-Agder-museet er det en ære og en glede å bidra til videreføring av kunnskapen rundt denne viktige kulturarven og delta i båndets reise videre.

Snartemo V – Tablet Woven Heritage from the Migration Period
In this book, we will explore new methods which may unveil some of the Snartemo V band’s secrets. When archaeology and history are combined with artisanal skill, new insight is gained. Practical and theoretical approaches will bring us closer to an answer.
The Snartemo V-band is more than just a textile; it is a witness to history from the Migration Period. It stands as a material expression of culture, history, and artisanship that has travelled through time.
The history of the Snartemo V-band remains partly concealed from us, yet we strive to uncover some of its mystery while allowing it to retain its own story. With the expertise of skilled weavers Randi Stoltz and Rasmus Twisttmann Jørgensen, we have gained insight into how the band was crafted.
We also draw upon the sister band from Øvre Berge, a nearly identical band from slightly further south in the same valley. What do weavers see when they study these bands 1,500 years after they were made? Here, in this book we follow the artisan’s encounter with their predecessors – the weavers of the past.
By employing modern technological methods, researcher PhD Krista Wright has led fibre and colour analyses that provide a deeper understanding of the properties of the Snartemo V-band. We highly recommend the article «A Chieftain’s Colourful Garments,» published in Archaeological Textiles Review in 2022 and in Crafting Power (2025). Elisabeth Vetland has then dyed yarn in her pots, inspired both by these analyses and by the pursuit of hues that capture nature’s beauty. Perhaps this was also something the original dyer sought to achieve?
Finally, Samuel Høiland has explored the symbolism and compiled the texts.
The most beautiful grave find from the Migration Period
The villages and settlements of the valleys in western Agder, southern Norway, are rich in archaeological finds from the Early Nordic Iron Age (500BCE-550CE), especially from the Migration Period (375-550CE).
Amongst these are the finds from Snartemo.
This region is part of the greater “Migration Period complex” in south-western Norway. The grave at Snartemo was discovered during ploughing in the autumn of 1933. The archaeologist Bjørn Hougen (1898-1976) described it as “The most beautiful Migration Period grave find which until this day has been unearthed from Norwegian soil”. In addition to the world-famous ring sword with a grip covered with plates of pure gold, the grave also contained other valuable artefacts. Among these is the tablet woven band known as the Snartemo V band. The Snartemo band plays the main role in our present story, and just like the rest of the grave, this band carries many secrets and mysteries.
For the Vest-Agder Museum, it is both an honour and a pleasure to contribute to the continued dissemination of knowledge about this important cultural heritage and to take part in the band’s journey forward.
